We've only somewhat touched upon Les Miserables in the past before, because it was a sore subject to Wolverine fans. Hugh Jackman will be filming the adaptation this spring, but there's one vital female castmember not yet secured. Now, rumors are coming out that a quartet of four women are set to compete for the role.
New York Post has revealed that actresses Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift, and Evan Rachel Wood are all being looked at for the role of Eponine in the upcoming film adaptation, says an anonymous source.
Director Tom Hooper is "weighing his options" , and the source claims that all four have already auditioned for the part. It's all just a matter of who Hooper will pick. As Slashfilm says about the character, Eponine is "the spoiled child of the cruel Thénardiers, but the family falls into poverty. As a young lady, Éponine also has the bad luck of falling for Marius (Eddie Redmayne), who in turn only has eyes for Fantine’s (Anne Hathaway) daughter Cosette."
While this isn't exactly the most reliable source of information, given that it's an anonymous from the Post, it's pretty interesting. Out of the four, my personal choice would be Lea Michele. She had a history with the play, playing a role when she was much younger, and seems to outshine the other actresses when it comes to the combined force of acting and singing. However, don't count Wood out just yet either. She showed the same method in Across the Universe.
I can't see Scarlett Johansson belting out a number such as "On My Own", and Taylor Swift isn't ready for this kind of role just yet. She's only acted in one film, Valentine's Day, and her next effort is simply a voiceover part. in my eyes, Michele would be the clear winner. Then again, it's not my choice. But, Tom Hooper, if this is indeed more than just a simple rumor, let me present for your consideration:
Les Miserables, starring Jackman, Hathaway, Redmayne, Russell Crowe, and more, is scheduled to begin filming early 2012 for a release sometime in 2013.
Out of the rumored actresses for the part, which do you think deserves the role? Let us know either in the comments below, or tweet us @FilmThrasher on Twitter!
