Though Edgar Wright has had a successful turn in writing with The Adventures of Tintin, the director hasn't been behind the camera since the box-office bombed yet highly popular hit Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. While he's gearing up for the final installment in the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy with Simon Pegg, it seems Wright's directorial career will be taking a turn into a place much revered: Walt Disney Pictures. Even more interesting, the British cinematographer will be teaming up with Johnny Depp.
Deadline reports that Wright will be helming The Night Stalker, a remake of an ABC television film of the same name and television series from the 1970s. There is currently no writer on the project, but Disney is developing the film as a starring role for Johnny Depp as tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak, previously portrayed by Darren McGavin.
The film is a supernatural one, where Kolchak's character covers crime for a tabloid paper, that eventually leads him to stumbling upon vampires, werewolves, zombies, aliens, and more. His editorial staff, or anyone else, would never believe him, but Kolchak lays a hand in uncovering the crime, and eventually putting himself in the line of fire.
The old series has a soft spot in Depp's heart, which is why Disney began to place the film together. The actor is currently developing The Lone Ranger with Armie Hammer and Gore Verbinski for Disney as well, with another project about Paul Revere in development as well, marking up the Depp-Disney total to three films. No word yet if this could increase as another Pirates of the Carribbean could be added into the mix as well. Depp's only Disney film he's currently negotiated to star in is The Lone Ranger.
Disney's goal is to tone down some of the scarier elements of the series to bring the rating to PG-13 level.
