On last week’s premiere, Jenna was hiding her affair with Matty from boyfriend Jake after Matty declared himself to her. Heartbroken and drunk, Matty took out his sad tears on a hook up with queen bee Sadie that didn't exactly go according to plan. This go around, Jenna finds herself confronted by her secrets by something that is completely out of her hands. The school was "TMZ'd" and a very revealing tape was stolen. I know all of this sounds like something out of a soap opera, but it's not; it's just another episode of Awkward.
I'll start this off by saying with fair warning to all of the Jake and Jenna fans out there that I do not like Jenna for Jake. At all. Jake is completely smitten with her even though he has his reservations, especially about her not being a virgin, but Jenna has not been giving her all to Jake, while he's been putting his heart on the line. I find this frustrating for so many reasons. Firstly, Jenna should be honest to herself about Matty. I know she told him she wasn't in love with him but she was lying to him and it was very easy to see it. Her feelings for Matty will never fully dwindle and the only way she can face it is if she tells Jake the truth despite him saying that he doesn't want to hear it. Facts are facts, and I acknowledge the fact Matty was terrible to Jenna in many ways, but you don't go after his best friend despite that.
Secondly, Jake is fully into Jenna; he never wants to hide anything from her and here she is constantly relived that he didn't want to hear it. I guess you can argue that Matty should tell Jake about the hook up and he should. But his reasoning is different from Jenna's. He doesn't want to hurt Jake and he doesn't want to lose him, but he shouldn't be hitting on his girlfriend either. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Matty and Jenna deserve each other. Someone like Jake deserves a girl that knows what she wants, not an emotional mess.
Now that I got that out of the way, I totally felt bad for Matty when Jenna ignored his declaration of love and when he begged for her not to tell Jake because he didn't want to lose him. Matty needs to grow the hell up and this is what is going to finally get him to realize that things won’t come easy for him just because he's sexy; he's going to have to do more. It was also a great sign of maturity on his end that he apologized to Jenna for what he put her through. I don't doubt for a second that Jake likes Jenna a lot, but do I question whether Matty loves Jenna? No. I completely believe that Matty is in love with her and wants to be with her no questions asked, he just doesn't know what to do with his feelings because he's a man child. Jenna can hide it and deny it all she wants but she cares for Matty too and it's a shame because it's not the secret that will hurt her and Jake it's her ultimate denial.
I wish Glee would take some notes from Awkward in the humor department because that was an effective way to do the Asian joke without coming off offensive. Becca is definitely the Asian Sadie and I'd be damned if these two don't team up as an evil duo who tear down the school. I vote to see more of her, as she's a great nemesis for Ming who I love seeing more of. Also Tamara confidently declaring that Ming joined the Asian Mafia was so, so, so good.
Jenna also learned a valuable lesson in secrets when her blog stalker told her that you don't share secrets that aren't your's. Her mother’s secret about the letter, definitely not her's. I love that her mother was cooking all of the food to get to her, but I'm glad that she chose to let the cat out of the bag and be honest with her husband, I mean it took her long enough but I'm glad she did it. The fallout from it is going to suck miserably but that’s life sometimes and all of our choices have consequences. Her mother had to grow up fast, and she made a bone headed move instead of talking to her daughter about how worried she was about her. I hope they work things out soon enough because despite their short comings, like writing weird letters and being creepy with condoms, the two of them love their daughter and each other. I hope they work through it.
