Homeland is showing no signs of stopping. After the heart thumping season premiere last week, the second season of this CIA thriller continues to leave its fans breathless. But is all the mystery enough to keep audiences coming back or is this slow burn too slow for some?
We're still in Beirut with Carrie who is trying to get in contact with her informant. Unfortunately, she goes on her own without Saul causing David to be a little wary of her intel. Saul, however, has a lot of faith in his friend because he believes her when she says her informant is a good one.
Her informant tells Carrie that her husband is planning a secret meeting with Abu Nazir the next day. Saul decides to go forward with the capture of Nazir but things don't go according to plan.
Nazir's men are too good and they cautiously clear the streets. But that's not the worst of it.
The worst part is that the Vice President stupidly brings Brody in on the operation giving the man ample opportunity to warn Nazir. I literally screamed at my television. Which is very disruptive being that everyone I live with is asleep when this show airs. But yes, I cursed out Brody tonight.
Here was the perfect chance to rid himself of Nazir forever and he couldn't let it happen. If anyone has been questioning where Brody's loyalties lie, it's with Nazir. I'm convinced. Sort of.
The man is a puzzle. One minute he's saying that he's not a terrorist so much to the point that even I believe him and the next he saves the terrorist that made him a prisoner for eight years.
Well, considering that despite the fact that the mission was a complete bust, Carrie's informant came through. That's enough for the CIA to extract her from the country and bring her to the US. But not before Carrie puts the entire team in danger by going back into the apartment to look for clues as to Nazir's plans.
After a very heart pounding chase within a maze of an apartment building, Carrie gets out and the entire team including the informant is safely transported back home.
Don't get me wrong, it was a cool scene. It really had my heart in my throat. I was expecting someone to get killed. But I think the writers kind of dropped the ball. I think they should have somehow made Brody aware that Carrie was there and that she almost got caught because of his actions, though indirectly.
One of my favorite things about this show is the dynamic between Carrie and Brody. Because she knows that he's a traitor, deep down in her subconscious, even if she may not remember it. But her feelings for him are strong. It's a matter of whether or not she'll turn him in or would she protect him.
I'd like to think it'll be both. She would turn him in only to help him escape. But that's just the romantic in me speaking. I really can't wait for these two to reunite on screen again.
Brody's friend, Mike, is back and he's asking a lot of questions about Walker's death and the day of the shooting. He asks Brody to use his new clearance in Congress to find out something. Brody, of course, doesn't because he killed Walker and what happened the day of the shooting was a distraction. He was supposed to be the main event. But I don't see Mike letting this go. I keep thinking something is going to happen to him and I have a feeling it'll be Brody's doing. Plus he slept with his wife, so you really can't help but understand why Brody is not fond of his old friend.
But the big cliff hanger of the night is that Carrie got something very important from that apartment. Hidden within a purse she took was a computer chip. On it is the proof that Brody is a traitor. And it's in Saul's hands. But will Saul survive long enough to tell someone?
This season of Homeland so far is very much stronger than the first. With only two episodes in, the series has revamped itself in a way I didn't think would be possible. While we may not know where Brody's true loyalties lie or what Carrie's fate will be within the CIA or even Nazir's end game, the series has done a fantastic job in keeping audiences intrigued along the way. I'm curious to see who Saul will show this video to and if this is what will lead to the big reunion between Brody and Carrie that audiences are waiting anxiously for.
