Previously on New Girl: Hipsters who didn't know who Urkle was. This week on New Girl: Nick Miller doesn't compute bro love but is aroused by Jess and Cece boob fighting. If this intro confused any of you, then you probably don't watch this show and would much rather not read my crazy review up ahead.
Last week on New Girl...no wait there was no New Girl last week because we were preempted for the debates. I'm not bitter or anything. I swear. (I secretly don't watch the Debates. I prefer to read about them and watch The West Wing instead.) Alas I missed New Girl last week. Speaking of missing things, Cece is back on tonight. After missing an episode she makes a fierce fine return back.
"Models" laid it on thick with the friendship theme. We had three different dynamics front and center in this episode (four if you count Nick and Jess and what now seems to be their mandatory scene together.) Cece and Jess, Nick and Schmidt, and Winston, Schmidt and Nick.
It all starts with Cece's birthday. Normally Cece and Jess hang back and watch Clueless together, girl talking about how incredibly hot Paul Rudd is. (Side bar, me and my best friend Kristina do the same thing and it is awesome.) But now things have changed because Cece is a model and she wants to be cool and party with her model friends including Nadia, Cece's nutty roommate from last season. Jess in true form HATES Cece's model friends and wants to avoid them at all costs. Of course she has good reason to because they all think she looks like a Russian Monkey cartoon, which is surprisingly accurate. And they make her do the monkey dance which Jess obviously hates. Needless to say the two of them get down and dirty with a boob fight. Which girls totally do! (I'm lying. Sorry. Not sorry.) Jess ends up making it up to Cece by modeling for her after Cece got drunk because of her fight with Jess. The two make up and hang out with the boys while watching Clueless; it's all very cute. Girlmance forever!
On the other end of the friend spectrum, we have Schmidt and Nick who are boys and act like it. I am not a dude, (last time I checked. Maybe.) and I'm not familiar with their intricacies so much but it seems common with some male friendships. There's always a sterner dude and a more affectionate loving fella. Obviously Schmidt is the affectionate one who goes out and buys Nick cookies and is a sweet heart, where as Nick doesn't know how to show love and says himself that he doesn't deserve Schmidt's love. Winston sides with Schmidt since he doesn't think Nick knows how to show affection either and there's trouble in the bro territory. We also have a cute flashback of Nick and Schmidt meeting which was adorable. Nick has an X-Files poster above his bed, and he doesn't have to show me affection I will marry him anyway. The boys resolve their issues after Nick sheds some man tears. There are lots of hugs and love and I cry with them and for them.
Our fourth friendship was one that remained strongest throughout the whole episode, Nick and Jess. They talk about which one of them is the shittier friend and all it says is how good of a friendship they have with one another. Nick gets aroused by Jess and Cece boob fighting. That's all I got out of this scene to be honest with you guys. I'm glad we haven't had a single episode without Jess and Nick because I love them so. I'm also glad they laid down the law about their relationship so that it's not awkward when they objectify each other in one way or another.
The friendship arc was great, because after all this show to its core is about friendship. I do wish we could give Winston more to do besides buffer everyone else. I just feel like they have no idea what to do with him again. It was probably the weakest link of the entire thing, Winston just being there to side with Schmidt and have funny asides that were once again not as funny as Schmidt's. Lamorne's timing is being wasted.
On a happier note. Nick wanted to get a turtle and name it Jess was just the most precious thing...even though he wanted to do that before he met Jess. (Okay buddy.) Also any episode with fat Schmidt is a major win on our end.
Next week we get a New Girl Halloween! Can I get a hey now?!
