WATCH THIS: Young Stephen Colbert Reports For ABC's 'Good Morning America' in 1997

These days, Stephen Colbert is best known for his work on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart that eventually created a spin-off with The Colbert Report creating a primetime punch of news that has racked up an astonishing number of Emmy nominations for Oustanding Variety Series. Before that, Colbert's television role was that on the short-lived Comedy Central cult smash Strangers with Candy where he portrayed one of the main characters for nearly all 30 episodes.

But today it turns out that before he started giving his take on the latest political issues and developments, Colbert was primed to be a reporter on another series: Good Morning America.

ABC has posted a video today that they have uncovered where a 34 year old "Steve Colbert" is a correspondent for the early morning television series where he reports live from Purdue University on a Rube Goldberg machine competition between students. Though he isn't cracking jokes like we're used to today, Colbert still finds time in a long-winded explanation to at least give audiences a brief moment to laugh:

Good Morning America airs every morning at 7AM on ABC, while The Colbert Report airs Mondays through Thursday at 11:30 PM on Comedy Central.
