Though set photos have somewhat stopped for the time being, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is two months deep into production as the anticipated follow-up is forming for a release more than a year from now. With all our favorite characters back, it's exactly what new director Francis Lawrence has to offer in terms of a new vision that could either make or break the series. But it seems that Lionsgate is thrilled with what's surfaced so far while Lawrence is is apparently loving his time in The Hunger Games universe. So much so that it seems he won't be leaving anytime soon as the studio has just revealed he'll be booked for the next few years.
Attending a press conference from Lionsgate for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Collider has exclusively revealed that Francis Lawrence has signed on to film the final two films of the four part saga. Lawrence took over for original director Gary Ross, who believed he simply would not have enough time for pre-production on the sequel in order to meet the set filming start so that Jennifer Lawrence can move on to X-Men: Days of Future Past in January.
The news comes exactly one month after Game Change scribe and Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet Danny Strong was hired to pen the final two installments in the franchise. The final of three novels, Mockingjay will be split into two parts while it's incredibly likely that both will enter principal photography sometime next year for a back-to-back production in order to keep down cost.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Parts 1 and 2 will star Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claflin and more with set release dates for November 21st, 2014 and November 20th, 2015, respectively.
