THE NEWS BUNDLE: Damon Lindelof Reveals Director Brad Bird Also Co-Writing Disney's '1952', Production Aiming To Start Mid-2013

After finding criticism due to his work on Prometheus earlier this year, Damon Lindelof's next project set up at Walt Disney Pictures certainly has caused quite the buzz as 1952 s under way with Brad Bird to direct. With a strong sci-fi vibe, what exactly the film will tackle has been kept under lock and key since it was revealed. But now, Lindelof has unveiled that not only will we get to hear more about the film sooner rather than later, but if all goes according to plan camera will be rolling in the summer and he won't be the only member of the project working on the film's script.

Speaking with Collider, Damon Lindelof revealed that he and Brad Bird have actually begun to co-write the script for 1952. "[Brad and I] have now been co-writing the movie for the last four months and that’s been an incredible experience because anytime you write with a partner that you haven’t written with before they call bullshit on all your tricks that you have come to rely on and feel comfortable with, and then you learn from them in terms of how to think and how to evolve.”

But recently, there were rumors that have surfaced saying 1952 was aiming for a productions start in Vancouver early next year. Lindelof says that's not the case, but they are in fact looking for a mid-2013 start once they lock down some major production aspects. “We have to lock down some key casting elements and we have to make sure that the movie isn’t going to cost [Disney] an arm and a leg. I have confidence that we’ll be able to accomplish both those things and hopefully when we do we’ll be able to announce what this movie is.”

However, Lindelof stressed the project is not yet greenlit so an exact production start is up in the air for the time being. As for casting, reports surfaced last month that George Clooney was in negotiations to play the film's lead. Since then, there have been no updates and the actor's status with the film currently remains unknown.

Plot details have currently been tightly under wraps, but 1952 has reportedly been said to feature a story like Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The title is said to be based off of "a banker’s box of files and documents that had been left moldering in Walt Disney’s personal development lab...inside was a random-at-first-glance collection of documents and primary source materials that, when looked at all together, indicated that someone had been working on a project about alien contact".
