As Iron Man 3 heads into post-production and Thor: The Dark World starts to wrap up filming, the focus is now shifting to the Spring as filming will kick off on 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. With a handful of returning characters already confirmed, plot details have been kept tightly under wraps while it's been unknown just who else the second installment is planning on casting or bringing back into the fold. Now, the man leading the charge behind the superheroes has spoken out and revealed that we can expect the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. back on the big screen in just a little over a year.
Speaking with Total Film (via CSN), Samuel L. Jackson says that as far as he knows he'll be stepping behind the eyepatch once more next for the 2014 sequel. "I think my next time as Nick Fury is in Captain America: The Winter Soldier," said the actor, "because I’m not in Iron Man 3. None of the Avengers are in Iron Man 3. It’s a standalone Iron Man movie."
Fury's involvement was highly speculated for the longest time thanks to the already-confirmed returns of fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders), with the first logline of the film revealing a heavy involvement of the organization. Now that most of the S.H.I.E.L.D. crew will be back, shouldn't there be just one more returning member? Perhaps someone should call Jeremy Renner...
Also returning will be Chris Evans as out titular boy scout superhero and Sebastian Stan as the previously-thought-dead Bucky Barnes, also the film's titular Winter Soldier. Frank Grillo will play an all-new antagonist Crossbones, while Anthony Mackie will join the heroes as new superhero Falcon. No word yet on whether or not we'll have a tie-in to Red Skull, but Hugo Weaving has recently voiced a lack of enthusiasm to reprise his role.
Disney/Marvel have not yet confirmed Jackson for the sequel yet, but it seems pretty inevitable at this point. Unless he's somehow worked into Thor: The Dark World, this will be Jackson's sixth film as Nick Fury after making two uncredited cameos in Iron Man and Thor. The actor is expected to return in 2015 for Joss Whedon's The Avengers 2.
Directed by Anthony and Joseph Russo (Community), Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for release on April 4th, 2014.
For more from Jackson, you can see him host the 10th Annual Spike Video Game Awards live this Friday at 9PM EST/6PM PST.
