If there was one surprise smash this fall that seemed to have come out of nowhere, it may be the musical comedy Pitch Perfect. Revolving around a collegiate a capella singing group, the film just hit Blu-Ray and DVD after receiving positive critical reviews and a decent fan following. Though the box office was a slight success, it seems Universal might be more pleased with their original comedy than previously expected as now the male lead of the film reveals that the studio is planning to get a follow-up started as soon as possible.
Movieweb spoke with star Skylar Astin who told the site that Universal is currently meeting with actors to launch Pitch Perfect 2 into development. "I do have a meeting with a Universal representative next week," he said. "And I know that Rebel Wilson had her's last weekend. It's definitely a talking point." Astin goes on to mention the possibility of filming the sequel sometime next year, but with the second installment in very early development and no commitments set it may be months before we see the film gain some traction.
Pitch Perfect producer Paul Brooks and director Jason Moore have stated in an interview a sequel was possible and now it certainly seems as if Universal is definitely planning ahead. It's likely the Moore will be back along with principal cast members such as Anna Kendrick, Astin, Wilson and more, but there's no word on whether or not we could see graduating castmembers (Anna Camp's character played a senior in the film) return.
