After over 12 years, in the Fall of 2011 it was revealed that Universal had begun development on a sequel to the rom-com drama The Best Man. But in the year and a half since the project's unveiling, things have somewhat slowed down as writer/director Malcolm D. Lee decided to tackle the revival of the Scary Movie franchise and its fifth installment. But now just months away from the spoof feature's release, it's been unveiled today that the ball has begun to roll on his other sequel and now there will be plenty of familiar faces to embrace comes this Thanksgiving.
Variety reports that the entire original cast of The Best Man will be returning to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel greenlit by Universal Pictures. This includes Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan and Regina Hall.
Lee is returning to direct a script he once again penned, in which "the college friends finally reunite over the Christmas holidays, and discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and romances to be ignited."
The original film followed Chicago novelist Harper Stewart (Diggs) as he became a successful author while his new book featured fictionalized versions of his friends and situations he's previously endured. This all culminated in a wedding day of Harper's best friend (Chestnut), which reunited the entire group of friends for not only the special occasion but to confront the writer about his latest creation.
The Best Man 2 is set for release on November 15th.
