After a weekend filled with reports on our end, tonight it was finally confirmed that Josh Boone would be the man responsible to direct the adaptation of the best-selling smash The Fault in Our Stars. But as we finally start to get the ball rolling for an eventual filming start, fans are eagerly anticipating just who will portray the story's two main characters. Now after a pair of names have already been revealed to be circling the part, it's been revealed that one teenage star has also joined the running to portray our main character.
THR's Borys_Kit, who originally broke the news of Boone's official signing today, has revealed that actress Hailee Steinfeld is also in consideration for the female lead of Hazel in the upcoming adaptation The Fault in Our Stars. This brings Steinfeld in as the latest to join the shortlist of stars in consideration for the main role, alongside Shailene Woodley and Mae Whitman.
The Fault in Our Stars follows 17-year old , three-year stage IV–terminal cancer patient Hazel, who is clinically depressed. To help her deal with this, her doctor sends her to a weekly support group where she meets Augustus, a fellow cancer survivor, who connect and fall in love.
Now that Boone has finally been confirmed, casting will go underway for Hazel and Augustus for a production start later this summer. With a script from Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (The Spectacular Now, (500) Days of Summer), author John Green has personally backed Mae Whitman to test for Hazel as the actress remains a very vocal friend of both Green and the novel. Woodley, meanwhile, is familiar with the scribes of the film previously portraying the female lead
Previously nominated for her supporting role in The Coen Brothers' True Grit, Steinfeld has a potential franchise on her hand later this year with another adaptation as the female lead of the sci-fi epic Ender's Game. A role as Hazel combined with the possible cinematic series could ultimately make Steinfeld a true actress in demand.
20th Century Fox's Fox 2000 division is set to distribute The Fault in Our Stars for a release sometime in 2014.
